About the Ontario Z air brake written test
You need a Z endorsement on your licence to drive any vehicle with air brakes in Ontario, whether it's a tractor-trailer, a dump truck or a bus. The written test checks how air brakes work, how to inspect them, and the rules you must follow.
- The written test has 20 multiple-choice questions, and you need 16 correct to pass.
- You also need to pass a practical air brake inspection, where you show the checks on a real vehicle.
- Know your numbers in kPa and psi: operating range, cut-in and cut-out, build-up time, leak-down limits and the low air warning.
- Topics include compressors and governors, tanks and valves, foundation brakes, brake adjustment, spring brakes, trailer connections, the daily inspection, ABS and the law.
These are independent practice questions written by Canam Fleet Safety Group. They are not the official test and are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, ServiceOntario or DriveTest. Rules change, so always check the current official MTO handbooks and the Highway Traffic Act. Last reviewed October 2026.
