About the Ontario Class A (AZ) licence
A Class A licence lets you drive tractor-trailers and other combinations where the towed vehicle is over 4,600 kg. Most drivers also need the Z air brake endorsement, which together is called an AZ licence.
- You must be 18, hold a G licence or higher, and pass a medical, vision test, knowledge test and road test.
- From January 1, 2027, you must have held a G licence for at least 6 months before your Class A road test.
- The road test includes a daily inspection, uncoupling and coupling, backing the combination, and on-road driving.
- Testing with a trailer that has no air brakes gives a restricted (AR) licence.
