About the Ontario M1 licence

The M1 is the first step to a full motorcycle licence. You need to be at least 16, pass a vision test, and pass written tests on road signs and on motorcycle knowledge and the rules of the road.

  • M1 riders: zero alcohol, daylight riding only, no passengers, and no roads over 80 km/h except listed northern highways.
  • The M1 is valid for 90 days, and you must hold it at least 60 days before the Level One road test.
  • At M2 you can ride at night and carry passengers (never on a moped), for at least 22 months, or 18 with an approved course.
  • Bring two pieces of ID and the test fee, plus glasses if you need them.

These are independent practice questions written by Canam Fleet Safety Group. They are not the official test and are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, ServiceOntario or DriveTest. Rules change, so always check the current official MTO handbooks and the Highway Traffic Act. Last reviewed October 2026.
