About the Ontario Class D licence

A Class D licence lets you drive trucks over 11,000 kg, such as dump trucks and straight trucks, and tow trailers up to 4,600 kg. You must be 18, hold a G licence, pass a medical, a vision test, a knowledge test and a road test.

  • Trucks with air brakes also need a Z endorsement.
  • The road test includes a daily inspection, where you name equipment and describe its condition.
  • Bring wheel chocks if the truck has air brakes.
  • Know your numbers: hours of service, tire tread depths, inspection rules, size limits and warning-device distances.

These are independent practice questions written by Canam Fleet Safety Group. They are not the official test and are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, ServiceOntario or DriveTest. Rules change, so always check the current official MTO handbooks and the Highway Traffic Act. Last reviewed October 2026.
